I received an email this morning from one of the many online game retailers, informing me that The Last Of Us on PS3 is currently available for £19.85 brand new. I tell you this because, although The Last Of Us Remastered seems like a bargain at £40 with all the DLC included, it's actually not that good of a deal.
So let's make one thing clear straight away - The Last Of Us is one of the best games of last year. It featured characters that seemed real and put them in proper grown-up situations, a great story and easily the best visuals on PS3. The only disappointing element was the gameplay itself which was reminiscent of Rockstar's Manhunt but without any improvement or innovation. I quickly got bored of the stealth mechanics which ultimately led me to give up playing long before the story reached its conclusion. It was still a solid 8/10 experience though.
Remastered sadly leaves the gameplay untouched and instead merely improves cosmetic things like the frame rate, lighting and overall appearance. Not that you can really tell most of the time as it was always a fantastic looking game anyway. The game should also come with a massive spoiler warning as it includes the Left Behind DLC, the very existence of which lets you know exactly how the main game's story ends!
This current trend for HD remakes is getting silly, quite frankly. Where updates of games like Oddworld or Flashback seem quite logical, as enough time has passed since their original release, but games like Tomb Raider and The Last Of Us do not need to exist on the new generation of machines only a year after their initial release.
PS4 does not need The Last Of Us: Remastered. What the PS4 needs is The Order, Driveclub or Uncharted 4. The Last Of Us is a great game, but you should play it on your PS3.
